Teaching Philosophy

I believe every student has their own musical voice, and my role is to help them uncover it. Technique and theory provide a solid foundation, while genuine growth comes from curiosity, creativity, and the freedom to explore. Lessons are shaped around each student's goals—whether that's learning jazz, improvising, playing favorite songs, jamming with others, or understanding music more deeply. My background in both music and psychology helps me teach with patience, clarity, and encouragement, creating an environment where students feel supported and confident as they learn.

What Students Learn

Students build strong fundamentals in technique, rhythm, ear training, and theory. From there, learning becomes personal and flexible. Jazz students explore improvisation, harmony, and comping; others may focus on repertoire, arranging, or composing. Each lesson develops practical skills and musical understanding while maintaining a sense of enjoyment and personal expression.

Lesson Format

Lessons are offered in 30, 45, or 60 minute sessions at my studio in Montreal, with online options available. Each lesson includes a mix of technique, repertoire, and creative exploration, along with clear guidance on how to practice effectively at home.

Who I Teach

I work with students of all ages and levels, from beginners to more advanced players. Many are adults starting or returning to piano, young learners building their foundation, or musicians interested in jazz and improvisation. Whatever the goal, I tailor the learning experience to help each student grow at a motivating and meaningful pace.

Testimonials

It was my very first experience learning music from scratch, and after just 10 classes I feel like I've built a solid foundation. The lessons were truly enjoyable, I really appreciated Yiwei's approach.

I've taken 10 courses with Yiwei so far and it has been a pleasure! She is prepared and always patient, while also being able to adjust the speed according to the student's progress. Her studio is also conveniently located, downtown. I look forward to taking more lessons in the future.

I am an adult beginner piano student and I had three specific goals when going into taking piano classes: - Learning to compose music for video games. - Learning how to play the piano (from sheet music and improvisation). - Learning music theory.

Yiwei gave me lessons in class and exercises to do at home every week that were tailored to help me achieve my very specific goals. She is very patient, always has a positive attitude, encourages curiosity and active participation during class and explains concepts in music and piano playing in a way that makes it very easy to grasp. I will be taking further lessons with Yiwei, and I highly recommend her to anyone wanting to learn piano at any level really.
